STATE HORSE. In 1993, the Legislative Assembly named the Nokota horse as the honorary equine (Ee-kwine), or horse, of North Dakota. Nokota horses are believed to be descendants of Sitting Bull’s horses. Only a few of these horses are left, and an organization has been established to save the Nokota horse from extinction.
