STATE TREE. The American Elm became North Dakota’s state tree in 1947. A common tree across the state, it often reaches a height of 120 feet or more. The American Elm is extremely hardy and can take temperatures as low as 45 degrees below zero.
Dutch elm disease, spread by the elm bark beetle, has destroyed thousands of these great trees. American elms trees that do not get Dutch elm disease can live to be three hundread years old.
