Absentee ballot:

  • Ballot used for voting at home rather than at the polls

Annual:

  • Yearly

Assessor:

  • Determines how much property is worth so it can be taxed properly

Ballot:

  • Paper for marking votes

Candidate:

  • Person who is trying to get elected

County:

  • Small unit of government that helps the state carry out its duties
  • North Dakota has 53 counties

County Auditor:

  • Bookkeeper for the county

County Commission:

  • Main governing body of a county

County Recorder:

  • In charge of county documents

County seat:

  • Town with a courthouse containing the offices of the county government

County Treasurer:

  • In charge of the county’s funds (money)

Deed:

  • Document to show proof of land ownership

Democratic Party:

  • Oldest political party in the United States
  • Symbol is a donkey

Independents:

  • People not connected with any political party

Local government:

  • Government smaller than state government
  • Includes county, township, and city governments

Municipal:

  • City

Nonpartisan (no-party) officials:

  • Political parties are not involved in their election

Ordinance:

  • City law

Political party:

  • Group of people which tries to get its candidates elected to public office

Politics:

  • The method by which groups make decisions about government

Polls:

  • Places to vote

Precinct:

  • Voting district

Represent:

  • Speak for

Republican Party:

  • Nicknamed “Grand Old Party” or GOP
  • Symbol is an elephant

Secret ballot:

  • Ballot marked privately

Sheriff:

  • Police officer for the county

State’s Attorney:

  • Lawyer who represents the state at the county level

Township:

  • Grids of land smaller than a county
  • Square of land measuring six miles on each side
  • 36 sections
