Allegiance:

  • Plan of government written by the Founding Fathers

Declaration of Independence:

  • Document which states that the 13 British colonies would no longer be part of Great Britain but would unite and form a new sovereign nation

Democracy:

  • Government ruled by the people

Founding Fathers:

  • Leaders in establishing the United States

Government:

  • Group of people who make rules for the nation

Independent:

  • Free to govern itself

Nation:

  • Large group of people in an area who are organized under one government

Natural citizen:

  • Any person born in the United States or whose parents are U.S. citizens

Natural rights:

  • The right to life
  • The right to liberty (freedom)
  • The right to own property

Naturalized citizen:

  • A person who is born in another country and becomes a citizen after moving to the United States

Represent:

  • Speak for

Republic:

  • Nation in which citizens elect people to represent them in the government

Revolutionary War:

  • War for Independence
  • War against Great Britain in order to gain independence, or freedom, from Great Britain

Sovereign:

  • Self-governing
