Supporting Question 3: Immigration

The third supporting question, “how did the railroads impact immigration in North Dakota?” helps students think through the role railroads played in immigration, both in recruiting workers to build the railroad, and recruiting settlers to build new communities that would utilize the services of the new transportation lines. Complete the following task using the sources provided to build a context of the time period and topic being examined.

Students will write a summary of how the railroads influenced immigration, settlement, and community building in North Dakota.

For this section, students will be required to find sources themselves. Using school and public library resources, and the internet, they will need to search for newspapers, periodicals, journals, books, interviews, photographs, and other primary and secondary sources to find evidence to support their arguments and claims. Some resources that might also be helpful may include the following:
