STATE GRASS. Western Wheatgrass was named the state grass in 1977. It is a tough native grass that once covered almost all of North Dakota. It is still found in every county of the state.

If you are looking over an area in North Dakota in early summer and see a blue-green patch of grass, that’s probably Western Wheatgrass.
